Baraga junior Carsyn Osterman leads Finlandia women to season-opening victory

NEW ULM, Minn. — Baraga junior Carsyn Osterman scored 21 points, making both of her 3-point attempts, and dished out a game-high six assists to help Finlandia University open its women’s basketball season with a 79-61 win at Martin Luther on Saturday.

Osterman was good on 8 of 16 from the field overall, adding six rebounds and a steal. Teammate Katie Lundeen recorded game highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Ishpeming junior Mariah Austin added six points, five rebounds and two steals to the winning effort in 20 minutes court time, while Ishpeming junior Katie Loman and Baraga sophomore Martina Jahfetson each had four points. Loman also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Jahfetson had three assists and two steals.

The Lions erased a 18-17 deficit after one quarter to go ahead 32-29 at halftime, coasting in the second half.

“Carsyn did a good job at running the point and getting the team organized,” Finlandia coach Mariah Dunham said. “I was very excited to see Marti (Jahfetson) get some quality minutes for us and our freshmen Olivia Green making a great debut.”
