1st HS football poll of 2020 out: 3 Superiorland teams gain votes
MARQUETTE — The first high school football poll of the abbreviated 2020 season is out, with Gladstone and Pickford at the top in 11-player and 8-player voting, respectively.
The 2-0 Braves received all five first-place votes in 11-player from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association for a point total of 25.
Sault Ste. Marie (2-1) was second with 20 points and Marquette (2-1) was third with 15.
Kingsford (2-1) was fourth with six, Iron Mountain (3-0) was fifth with five and Negaunee (2-1) was sixth with two points.
Completing the 11-player voting were West Iron County (3-0) and Calumet (1-2) with one point each, tying for seventh place.
The eight-player top team Pickford (3-0) received four first-place votes and 24 total points. The other first-place ballot went to 3-0 North Central, which had 21 total points.
The Munising Mustangs (3-0) were third with 11 points. Lake Linden-Hubbell (2-1) and Stephenson (3-0) tied for fourth with nine points while Cedarville (2-1) received one point.
The UPSSA cited changing to two polls this fall because there are now an equal number of teams, 18, playing both the eight- and 11-player games.
