Club championships: Ladies, juniors, men’s titles set for Marquette Golf Club

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Golf Club recently held three club championships, with two of them completed during the week headed into Labor Day weekend.

The Ladies Club Championship was contested on the club’s Heritage course on Aug. 29 and 30, while Junior Club Championship was held last Tuesday, also on the Heritage course.

Qualifying in the Men’s Club Championship was held the weekend of Aug. 29-30 on the Greywalls course as the 16 qualifiers were scheduled to determine a champion on Sunday of the holiday weekend.

Ladies Club

Seven women joined defending champion Nicole Noble in qualifying previous to the championship weekend, which held three rounds to whittle the field to a single champion.

In the quarterfinals, Noble felled Michelle Smith, Karla McCutcheon defeated Jan Hruska, Sheila Grazulis knocked off Morgan Rhoades and Jessica Hanley took out Mary Jo Stuart.

McCutcheon emerged victorious over Noble in one semifinal match, with the other going to Grazulis, who defeated Hanley.

Then in the finals, Grazulis outlasted McCutcheon to capture her first Ladies Club title.

Ella Pond

Other flight winners included Stuart in the first flight, Cheryl Bollero Oberstar in the second flight and Diane Noble in the third flight.

Junior Club

A half-dozen boys and girls were crowned club champions for their age divisions in the one-day tournament last week as 33 youngsters participated.

Ella Pond won the girls 14-17 division and was also crowned overall Girls Club champion. For girls ages 11-13, Roegen Hruska emerged victorious, as did Laine Hruska for the 8-10 division.

Among the boys, Joseph Luke shot 75 for the 14-17 division, followed closely by Lincoln Sager with 76, Jace Moore 78, Matt Anderson 80 and John Weber 82.

In the 11-13 boys, Boden Moore shot 42 over nine holes to win, while for 8-10 boys, Lake Skytta put together a nine-hole round of 48 for that championship.

Men’s Club

The top 15 scorers among 45 entrants in the qualifying round were set to join defending champion Robert Luke as four rounds of match play were to be needed to determine the top golfer in the championship flight. Their finishes also determined the match-play seeding with Luke at No. 1. Other flights were to join them on the course, too.

Laine Hruska

In qualifying, K.C. Bjorne shot 149 to earn medalist honors by two strokes. Chad Wester was runner-up with 151; followed by Mike Marietta with 153; Brett Specker and Dan Nygard each with 155; Ben Newhouse and Victor Harrington each with 156; Joe Negrinelli and Scott Prunick each with 157; Rick Rhoades, Dustin Hongisto and Dennis Hruska all with 158; Chris Rhoades and Kenn Hruska each with 159; and Scott Koski with 160.

First-round matches included Luke vs. Koski, Harrington vs. Negrinelli, Marietta vs. Dennis Hruska, Specker vs. Hongisto, Bjorne vs. Kenn Hruska, Newhouse vs. Prunick, Wester vs. Chris Rhoades and Nygard vs. Rick Rhoades.
