Upper Peninsula motorsports author Joe Verdegan to be at Sands during racing on Sunday

MARQUETTE — Motorsports author Joe Verdegan will host a signing of his most recent book, “Racing in the 906,” at Sands Speedway in Sands from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The book features an extensive look at stock car racing history in the Upper Peninsula, with a big part of it covering the quarter-mile paved oval in Sands, along with the drivers and promoters who have been part of the track’s history dating back to 1969.

Among the Marquette-area drivers and promoters referenced are former and current racers Allen Yelle, Mike Mattson, Joe Hulverson, Gary McAuliffe and Bruce Honkala. Current promoters Don Britton and Bob Goodwin tell their stories, along with former promoter Susan Racine and the man who built the track in 1969, Paul Smith. Some of these individuals may also be available at the book signing.

“Racing In The 906” is published by Pedal Down Promotions of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The book, Verdegan’s fifth in five years covering local and regional motorsports, also offers a detailed look at drivers and promoters at other U.P. tracks — Norway Speedway, U.P. International Raceway in Escanaba and Kinross Speedway in Sault Ste. Marie. More than 200 drivers, promoters and car owners were interviewed for the book.

Verdegan’s signing will be part of a big day of racing at the Sands oval that begins at 2 p.m. as five classes of cars compete, including late models, super stocks, four-cylinder modifieds, four-cylinder street tires and fuel injected V-8 classes. All division feature winners will receive a copy of “Racing In The 906.”
