Learned well at Northern Michigan University: Former Wildcat golfers Austin Elsner, Hunter Mires team up to win Upper Peninsula Golf Association 2-Man Best Ball in Marquette

MARQUETTE — Former Northern Michigan University golfers Austin Elsner and Hunter Mires teamed up to win the championship flight at the Marquette 2-Man Best Ball Tournament hosted by the Marquette Golf Club last weekend.

Elsner and Mires sizzled on the opening day Saturday with 62, then added 68 on Sunday for a 130 count, two strokes ahead of runners-up Brett Green and Karsten Green, who had 65-67–132.

The No. 2 team after Day 1, Cody Langdon and Jared Reid, finished third at 64-69–133, while Kurt Ghiardi and Joe Negrinelli were fourth at 66-72–138 and Bob Luke Jr. and Joseph Luke fifth at 67-72–139.

The rest of the championship flight included Tom Dionne and Dave Bonk with 66-75–141, Alex Palmer and Owen Beyer with 66-76–142 and Jim Higgins and Rob Carlson with 67-77–144.

Carter Hendricks and Byron Parks of MGC won the first flight with 67-68–135, just one stroke ahead of Dennis Hruska and Scott Koski with 67-69–136.

MGC members Mike Devine and Mike Marietta won the second flight by three strokes with Sunday’s best score of 65 as they had 69-65–134, while fellow MGCers Scott Frazier and Noah Peterson took the third flight by five strokes with 70-69–139.

Here are the other flight winners — fourth flight, Steve Larson and Tom Larson, 71-68–139; fifth, Victor Harrington and Jeff Simpson, 72-70–142; sixth, Eric Stern and Bruck Crookham, 73-68–141; seventh, Ben Specker and Mike Gagnon, 75-68–143; eighth, Marc McGovern and Jay Hillier, 77-69–146; ninth, Mike Grimes and Ed Grimes Jr., 80-76–156; and 10th, George Trujillo and Geoff Weston, 83-74–157.
