Upper Peninsula golfers converge on Munising for U.P. Junior Tour event

MUNISING — Six champions were crowned in various age groups at the second Upper Peninsula Junior Golf Tournament stop held at Pictured Rocks Golf Course on June 22.

Twenty-two golfers traveled to Munising for this U.P. Golf Association event ranging in age from 7 to 17, playing under overcast skies with temperatures in the mid-60s, according to organizers.

Maverick Moore won the boys age 7-9 group by shooting 50 for nine holes. He beat out Lake Skytta, who also shot 50, on a tiebreaker.

Jason Sandstrom captured the boys 10-11 group with 52 as Mason Nygard was runner-up with 55.

Boden Moore put together a sizzling 41 to win boys 12-13 with Graham Johnson second with 44.

Rachel Nickanen shot 118 to win the girls ages 14-15, while Jace Moore recorded 87 to win the boys title in the same age group. Caleb Beerman was boys runner-up with 91.

And for boys ages 16-17, Matt Solda won with 79 as Lincoln Sager was second with 82.

Next up on the tour’s itinerary are stops on back-to-back days next week. On Monday, the youth golfers converge at TimberStone Golf Club in Iron Mountain, while next Tuesday they head to Riverside Country Club in Menominee.

Among other stops this month are back-to-back Mondays at Indian Lake Golf Club in Manistique on July 20 and Wawonowin Country Club in Champion on July 27.
