Michigan Tech hockey team salvages split with Lake Superior State, but Lakers clinch John MacInnes Trophy

HOUGHTON — Lake Superior State captured the John MacInnes Trophy but Michigan Tech salvaged an important split of the Huskies’ Winter Carnival college hockey series over the weekend.

LSSU won the trophy named after the late Tech coach with a 10-7 total goals advantage after winning 7-3 Friday before MTU scored a 4-3 win in overtime on Saturday.

Alex Smith scored with 29.3 seconds left in OT to lift Tech on Saturday as teammate Brian Halonen was named Winter Carnival MVP with two goals and an assist Saturday to go with an assist Friday.

The Satuday win preserved Tech’s fifth-place standing in the WCHA with 35 points, just one point ahead of Bowling Green State, which scored a home sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 5-4 OT win Friday and 4-1 victory Saturday.

The Huskies had a chance to ease closer to Alaska-Fairbanks’ 40 points after the Nanooks won in 3-on-3 OT over Alabama-Huntsville after a 6-6 tie Friday to go with a 3-0 win Saturday.

UAF is in fourth, four points behind Northern Michigan University, while LSSU is seventh with 27 points.
