Ishpeming’s Kaukola counted on with Bay College softball team

ESCANABA — Freshman Korey Kaukola, a 2019 graduate of Ishpeming High School, will be counted on for leadership in the infield for the Bay College softball team this spring.

She is mentioned as “anchoring the infield at shortstop and will likely make big contributions in the heart of the lineup,” according to a news release last week from the school based in Escanaba.

Bay fielded a women’s softball team for the first time a year ago and had a successful 28-90 season and were runners-up in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 13 tournament.

The Norse split their two games at the Finlandia Dome Classic in the Superior Dome in Marquette over the weekend, falling to the Concordia, Wisconsin, JV 2-1 on Saturday and beating the Northern Michigan University club team 16-1 on Sunday.

In Bay’s win, Kaukola didn’t have an official at-bat but walked twice, stole a base and scored three runs. The Norse jumped out with 11 runs in the first inning en route to the three-inning win.

Kaukola also reached base once on Saturday despite not getting a hit or walk as she struck out twice in three at-bats. The Norse had just one hit.

Starting at $3.23/week.
