Trish McGuire of Gwinn leads Bay College women’s basketball team to pair of wins

ESCANABA — Gwinn freshman Trish McGuire made herself into a point-a-minute scorer coming off the bench for the Bay College women’s basketball team in a sweep of its own Quality Inn & Suites New Year’s Tournament held over the weekend.

Fortunately, her team found her double-digit minutes as she scored that way in a 92-37 shellacking of Sault College of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on Friday and a 65-49 win over Western Technical College of La Crosse, Wisconsin, on Saturday.

On Friday, McGuire scored 13 points in 13 minutes, then on Saturday, led all scorers with 18 points in 18 minutes. In each game, she sank three 3-pointers.

McGuire keyed a big offensive outburst by the Norse in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win. After her team held leads of either one or two points after each of the first three quarters, Bay broke things open with a 26-point final period for the win.

And McGuire had 11 points in that fourth quarter, making three layups and a triple in the period’s first three minutes. She added one more layup off her own offensive rebound in the final minute.

McGuire also had three steals and two rebounds Friday and six rebounds and a steal Saturday.

Three other players from the area also contributed to the wins.

Gwinn freshman Brooke Mannor scored five points and hit a triple in each game. She also had a rebound in just seven minutes vs. the Sault and two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot vs. Western.

Munising sophomore Kelsea Ackerman had five points with a trey and two rebounds on Friday. And another Mustangs sophomore, Marissa Ackerman, had one point and a rebound and assist on Friday and four points, an assist and a steal Saturday.

Bay (11-5) travels to St. Paul, Minnesota, to play the St. Catherine University JV team on Tuesday night and the St. Thomas University JV on Wednesday afternoon.
