Superior Central’s Joe Heinonen pours in 12 points for Finlandia men’s basketball team in loss

DULUTH, Minn. — Superior Central graduate Joe Heinonen scored 12 points, just one of two double-figures scorers for Finlandia, as the Lions men’s basketball team again came up short in a 96-69 loss at the College of St. Scholastica on Wednesday night.

Heinonen, a sophomore for Finlandia (0-18), made a pair of 3-pointers while pulling down seven rebounds and making an assist and a steal in 31 minutes as a starter.

Another Lions sophomore, River Shumate of Republic-Michigamme, added two points as he made both of his free-throw attempts while making four assists and two steals in just 12 minutes.

FU’s Dylan Underwood led all scorers with 26 points as he hit six triples and made nine rebounds and five assists while blocking two shots.

St. Scholastica jumped out to leads of 13-2 and 19-4 in the game’s first 5 1/2 minutes. Though the Lions cut their deficit to single digits soon after, the Saints re-established a 39-18 lead before holding a 50-35 advantage at halftime. Finlandia never got closer than that in the second half.

Up next for the Lions is a home-and-home pair of games against Bay College, with the game in Escanaba at 3 p.m. Saturday and another back in Hancock at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
