ASHLAND, Wis. — Superior Central sophomore Joe Heinonen started and scored 13 points in the Finlandia men’s basketball team’s 101-66 loss at Northland on Thursday.
Heinonen played 31 minutes and was the Lions’ second-leading scorer after Dylan Underwood, who had 16 points. Heinonen added a team-high 11 rebounds to go with two assists, two blocked shots and a steal.
Republic-Michigamme sophomore River Shumate didn’t score, but did have an assist in 13 minutes.
Heinonen made a jumper and layup in the first three minutes to get Finlandia (0-13) off to a solid 7-4 start, and his third bucket, a layup with 14:40 left in the first half, left the Lions trailing just 13-11.
But Northland (4-8) built a double-digit lead for good with 7:21 left and led 50-35 at halftime.
The Lions return home to host Alma at 1 p.m. Saturday.
