Superior Central product Joe Heinonen, Republic-Michigamme product River Shumate help Finlandia men’s basketball team vs. Gogebic
IRONWOOD — Superior Central sophomore Joe Heinonen scored 10 points and Republic-Michigamme sophomore River Shumate five as the Finlandia men’s basketball team lost 74-68 at Gogebic Community College on Wednesday night.
Heinonen made a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed nine rebounds while blocking five shots and making an assist and a steal for the Lions, who fell to 0-15 before playing Holy Family College of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, at home at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Shumate made one trey while pulling down three rebounds, dishing out four assists and making a steal in 21 minutes.
The teams shot very similarly, each making around 35 percent from the field overall and about 25 percent on 3-pointers. But while Finlandia was just 3 of 5 from the free-throw line, Gogebic made 23 of 34 there.
The Samsons led throughout the first half, upping to lead to as much as 26-12 before the Lions cut the deficit to 38-33 by halftime.
Gogebic also kept the lead throughout the second half, though FU cut it to one, 42-41, about three minutes in. The Samsons regained a double-digit lead several times later in the half while Finlandia got it back to four, 56-52, with 10 minutes left, and to five, 71-66, with 32 seconds to go.
