HANCOCK — Despite solid contributions from a pair of area high school graduates, the Finlandia men’s basketball team fell to 0-17 with a 116-70 loss to Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Superior Central sophomore Joe Heinonen started and scored 13 points with a 3-pointer and made five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

Republic-Michigamme sophomore River Shumate scored three points and grabbed three rebounds and made an assist and a steal in 16 minutes.

Heinonen’s layup with 14:59 left in the first half pulled the Lions within 15-11, but the Yellowjackets immediately went on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 25-11 advantage that became 50-27 by halftime.

Finlandia is off until it plays in Duluth, Minnesota, against St. Scholastica on Wednesday.
