DETROIT — Tournament MVP Logan Pietila recorded a three-goal hat trick and goaltending teammate Matt Jurusik made 35 saves as Michigan Tech won the Great Lakes Invitational college hockey championship with a 4-2 victory over the University of Michigan on Tuesday afternoon.

The Huskies won the title in the 55th edition of the GLI, their first championship since 2012 at Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings.

It also marked the first time Tech defeated Michigan and Michigan State at the same GLI, each a 4-2 victory this year.

Much like the semifinal game vs. the Spartans, MTU (12-8-1) trailed 2-1 after two periods before erupting for three goals in the final period. On Tuesday, Pietila tied just 1:29 into the third on his second goal, a give-and-go with teammate Trenton Bliss in the neutral zone before Pietila fired a quick wrist shot from just inside the blue line. The puck deflected off U-M goalie Strauss Mann and hit the inside of the post before going in.

Pietila finished off his hat trick and recorded just his fourth goal of the season with the game-winner with 4:20 left on a quick shot from the faceoff dot after teammate Justin Misiak created a turnover.

Tech’s Alec Broetzman added an empty-net insurance tally with nine seconds remaining in the Huskies’ fifth straight GLI championship game.

Jurusik’s 35 saves was a season high for him as he stopped 20 shots in the opening period that went scoreless.

Michigan (7-11-2) scored first not quite six minutes into the second period on a Nick Pastujov wraparound shot.

Pietila tied it less than five minutes later on a feed from Bliss, who joined Pietila, Jurusik and teammate Eric Gotz on the all-tourney team.

Michigan, which finished with a 37-31 edge in shots on goal, took a 2-1 lead with 1:32 left in the second on a shot by Jack Becker.

Tech plays this weekend at No. 17 Arizona State.
