Joe Heinonen, River Shumate help Finlandia Lions but still remain winless

HANCOCK — Area players Joe Heinonen and River Shumate combined to score 19 points but it wasn’t enough for the Finlandia men’s basketball team to get its first victory of the season at home against Alma on Saturday.

The Scots prevailed 97-89 as the Lions fell to 0-14 despite FU holding a 44-41 halftime lead.

Heinonen, a sophomore at FU, scored his team’s first five points and ended with 10 as he hit a pair of 3-pointers while pulling down five rebounds, making two assists and blocking a shot.

Shumate, a sophomore from Republic-Michigamme, had nine points, also pulling down five rebounds while making an assist and a steal. Shumate hit a layup at the first-half buzzer that expanded a one-point lead to three at the break.

Shumate also hit a jumper with 5:23 to go to give the Lions a 79-77 lead. It lasted a little over a minute until Alma tied it 81-81 with 4:09 left and took the lead for good with a pair of free throws 15 seconds later.

Finlandia goes to Ironwood Wednesday to face Gogebic Community College.
