Bailey Froberg hits game-winner for Finlandia women

DULUTH, Minn. — L’Anse junior Bailey Froberg waited until the time was right, or more accurately, ripe to make her only 3-pointer of the night in the Finlandia women’s basketball team’s 57-55 victory at St. Scholastica on Wednesday night.

Froberg, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, hit her triple with 11 seconds left to turn a two-point deficit into a 56-55 lead.

Teammate and Baraga sophomore Carsyn Osterman added a free throw with five seconds to go for the final margin.

“This game was a program changer,” FU head coach Mariah Dunham said. “St. Scholastica is a great program coached by a great coach. For us to go to their place and be tough enough to handle beating a team three times shows a lot about our heart.

“Bailey (Froberg) didn’t a make a 3 all game, but she made it when it mattered. Big stops were made defensively when the game was on the line. Very proud of this team.”

Osterman finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. She also made three assists and three steals while playing 32 minutes coming off the bench.

Katie Lundeen led Lions scorers with 16 points.

Ishpeming sophomore Mariah Austin added nine points, making 3 of 5 shots from the field and 3 of 4 at the free-throw line, while adding two rebounds and an assist in just 16 minutes.

Another Ishpeming sophomore, Katie Loman, had one point and three assists.

FU led most of the way, holding leads of 11-7 after one quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 40-34 at the end of the third period.

St. Scholastica pulled into a 52-52 tie with 2:38 left before the teams traded leads down the stretch that led to Froberg’s winning trey.

The Lions play a home-and-home pair of games with Bay College in the next week, playing in Escanaba at 1 p.m. Saturday before hosting the Norse at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
