River Shumate paces Finlandia men’s basketball team in loss in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — Sophomore River Shumate of Republic-Michigamme scored 10 points as the Finlandia men’s basketball team lost 98-79 to Carleton College at the Orlando Classic played in Florida on Thursday night.

Shumate made a pair of 3-pointers while grabbing four rebounds and making an assist in 25 minutes of action.

Another Lions’ sophomore, Joe Heinonen of Superior Central, scored eight points, also making a pair of triples, while adding four rebounds.

Finlandia (0-12) trailed 56-44 at halftime to the Knights of Northfield, Minnesota, in the second day of the Orlando event. On Tuesday, FU lost 103-66 to Hope.

With Carleton leading 30-19 about eight minutes into the game, Finlandia went on a 10-1 run in the next two minutes to cut its deficit to 31-29. The Lions still only trailed 40-37 before Carleton finished the first half on a 16-7 spurt.

The Lions play next on Jan. 2 at Northland College.
