Area high school graduates contribute for Finlandia basketball teams in setbacks in Florida tournaments

ORLANDO, Fla. — Baraga sophomore Carsyn Osterman and L’Anse junior Bailey Froberg were the only Finlandia players to score in double figures as the Lions lost to downstate Hope College 82-51 in the opening round of the Orlando Classic on Tuesday night.

In the men’s companion tourney, Finlandia also fell to Hope, 103-66, as sophomores River Shumate of Republic-Michigamme and Joe Heinonen of Superior Central also got on the scoreboard.

Osterman, Froberg total 25

Osterman scored 15 points and Froberg 10 for the Lions’ women as both started and made a 3-pointer. Osterman added five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Froberg had three assists and two rebounds.

In addition, sophomore Mariah Austin of Ishpeming had four points, three rebounds and a steal. Felow Ishpeming sophomore Katie Loman and Baraga freshman Martina Jahfetson each scored two points, Loman adding three rebounds and a steal and Jahfetson a rebound.

Finlandia (5-9) struggled holding onto the ball and with its shooting against the No. 4 team in NCAA Division III. Hope is 11-0 as the Lions committed 22 turnovers and made 28 percent (15 of 53) from the field, while Hope held a 54-33 rebounding edge.

The Flying Dutch led 21-11 after one quarter and 44-25 at halftime.

Finlandia faces North Park of Chicago at 5 p.m. today back in Orlando.

Hope outshoots FU men

Shumate scored seven points and Heinonen six as each made a triple. Shumate added five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot, while Heinonen, who started, also had five rebounds.

Finlandia (0-11) made 32 percent (21 of 65) while Hope made 52 percent from the field.

The Flying Dutchmen led 56-29 at halftime as Hope jumped out to leads of 8-0 in the first three minutes and 23-4 before the game was seven minutes old. Finlandia did immediately score six straight points to get within 23-10, but Hope steadily built its lead to more than 20 later in the half.

FU also opened the second half on a 6-2 run, but the Dutchmen got its lead to more than 30 points about 6 1/2 minutes in.

The Lions face Carleton of Northfield, Minnesota, at 7 p.m. today back in Orlando.
