Osterman helps FU get 1st win

HOLLAND — Sophomore Carsyn Osterman of Baraga scored 10 points as the Finlandia women’s basketball team recorded its first victory of the season, a 77-69 victory over St. Mary’s (Indiana) at the Hope Tipoff Classic in downstate Holland.

Osterman went 6 of 6 at the free-throw line while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds to go with three assists and a game-high three steals. Four of her free throws came in the game’s final 25 seconds and helped cement the win.

Sophomore Mariah Austin of Ishpeming added eight points, making 4 of 5 shots from the field, while adding six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior Bailey Froberg of L’Anse added an assist and steal in five minutes of floor time. Their teammate, sophomore Katie Lundeen, scored 36 points and set a Lions’ record by making 14 free throws as she went 14 of 16 at the line.

St. Mary’s led 21-19 after one quarter before Finlandia grabbed a 35-34 advantage at halftime. FU built its lead to 45-41 after three quarters.

Finlandia (1-3) continues its road trip on Wednesday against Lawrence in Appleton, Wisconsin.
