Heinonen, Shumate lead Lions

HANCOCK — The area’s two representatives on the Finlandia men’s basketball team both scored in double figures but it wasn’t enough to avert a 90-74 loss to visiting Lakeland on Tuesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Sophomore Joe Heinonen of Superior Central registered a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while fellow sophomore River Shumate of Republic-Michigamme scored 13 points, including a quartet of 3-pointers.

Heinonen added two blocked shots and an assist, while Shumate was 4 of 7 from the field, all on 3-point attempts, and pulled down five rebounds and made two steals and two assists.

Lakeland (1-1) jumped out to a double-digit lead early before Finlandia (0-3) got themselves back in the game. But down 37-31 with 2:41 left before halftime, the visiting Muskies went dry on the scoreboard, enabling the Lions to take a 40-37 halftime lead.

After Heinonen sank a bucket from the paint to make it 42-37 a minute into the second half, Lakeland went on a 14-2 run to take a 51-44 advantage with 15:36 to go.

The local guys helped get their team back in it as Shumate sank a triple and Heinonen a 2-point jumper to close their team’s deficit to 53-49 about a minute later. Then the Muskies went on an 8-0 run to rebuild a double-digit lead, where it stayed for most of the rest of the contest.

Junior Dylan Underwood led Finlandia, nearly reaching a triple-double with 25 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. Lakeland’s Carlos Campos led all scorers with 29 points, hitting five 3s and 10 of 11 free throws.

Finlandia looks for its first win at Lawrence in Appleton, Wisconsin, at 4 p.m. EST Saturday.
