Etelamaki makes NCAA nationals

BIG RAPIDS — Westwood High School graduate Katie Etelamaki, a senior cross country runner at Ferris State University, has been selected to compete at the NCAA Division II national championship meet.

This will be her second consecutive year at the nationals after she earned All-American honors by placing 16th at the 2018 meet in Pittsburgh, according to the FSU website, www.ferrisstatebulldogs.com.

This year’s nationals will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California, as Etelamaki was chosen as one of six individual qualfiiers following the Midwest Region meet held in Evansville, Indiana, on Saturday.

She finished in 11th place in 21 minutes, 18.8 seconds on the six-kilometer course.

The top three teams from each of eight NCAA regions qualified for the nationals, along with 10 more “wild card” teams. Finally, a minimum of two dozen more individuals were chosen through an automatic qualifer and at-large selection process, according to FSU.

The university also indicated that a live web stream of the meet will be held online at FloTrack from 1 p.m. EST until the conclusion of the awards ceremony on Nov. 23.

This season, Etelamaki was named All-GLIAC First Team and All-Regional, each for the third straight year. She was also an All-American in outdoor track last spring in the 10,000-meter run.
