Bay women’s basketball team sweeps on road

ESCANABA — Players from Marquette and Alger counties led or shared game-scoring honors in a pair of Bay College women’s basketball road victories over the weekend that improved the Norse to 6-1.

Sophomore Kelsea Ackerman of Munising shared team scoring honors with 11 points as Bay pulled away in the second half for a 68-49 win at Milwaukee Area Technical College on Friday.

Ackerman scored 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Bay led just 11-9 after one quarter and 30-25 at halftime. The Norse didn’t score a point in the first five minutes of the game, but trailed just 2-0. Bay’s 20-10 third quarter started putting the game out of reach.

Ackerman hit her 3-pointers about a minute apart in the second quarter, powering a 12-2 run by the Norse that made it 23-11 about 4 1/2 minutes into the second. She added two rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action.

Freshman teammate and Gwinn graduate Brooke Mannor scored three points, hitting her only 3-point attempt, in seven minutes, while sophomore Marissa Ackerman of Munising scored two points, making both of her free-throw attempts, and adding two rebounds and two assists. And Gwinn freshman Trish McGuire also scored two points to go with a rebound, assist, steal and blocked shot.

On Saturday, Mannor led all scorers with 17 points, including a 3-pointer, in Bay’s 91-19 laugher at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. Kelsea Ackerman scored 13 points with three 3s, while Mannor had four points. Other statistics weren’t available.
