Westwood, L’Anse drop a spot in latest rankings

MARQUETTE — A pair of area teams made a small move down in the polls as things remain largely unchanged from last week in the Upper Peninsula high school football polls released today by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

With voting conducted by a select group of the UPSSA, Westwood (6-2) in Large Schools and L’Anse (4-4) in Small Schools took a one-position drop from the previous week.

While it wasn’t a surprise after the Purple Hornets were thumped by Small Schools No. 1 Iron Mountain 51-6 on Friday, the Patriots’ drop was a bit more puzzling.

Westwood fell from a tie for No. 5 into the “others” category despite scoring a big 47-0 victory at winless Gogebic on Friday.

The team the Pats were tied with previously, Menominee, took over the No. 5 spot after the Maroons (5-3) trounced traditional power Kingsford 47-8 to drop the Flivvers to a 4-4 record.

L’Anse flip-flopped with Lake Linden-Hubbell (5-3), with the Lakes now No. 4 and L’Anse No. 5.

The other three area teams held their positions — Marquette (4-4) at No. 3 and Negaunee (6-2) at No. 4 among Large Schools, and Ishpeming (6-2) at No. 2 in Small Schools.

The only other change in any of the three polls was Calumet (7-1) retaking the No. 1 spot among Large Schools from Escanaba (6-2). While the Copper Kings throttled Hancock 42-6 on Friday, Esky took a beating by Traverse City Central, 62-7, also on Friday. Early in the season, TC Central (7-1) only slipped past Marquette 37-28.

No area teams were ranked in this week’s Associated Press state polls.
