Qualifier sets field at MGC’s Men’s Club Championship

MARQUETTE — Thirty-six holes of qualifying were held over the weekend to determine the championship flight in the Men’s Club Championship at the Marquette Golf Club.

Four rounds of match play will whittle a field of 15 qualifiers and defending champion Chad Wester down to this year’s champ and will be held over the upcoming long Labor Day weekend. The championship match is scheduled to tee off at 1:15 p.m. next Monday.

All rounds in the tournament have been and will be played on the MGC’s Greywalls course.

Scott Prunick shot rounds of 75 Saturday and 73 Sunday for a 148 total to become qualifying medalist by five strokes over runner-up K.C. Bjorne, who had 77-76–153.

Five other golfers also broke 160 — Robert Luke shot 76-78–154, Dan Nygard 78-77–155, Jon Kamps 76-79–157, Joe Hansen 72-86–158 and Kenn Hruska 79-80–159.

The balance of the qualifiers were Joe Negrinelli with 80-80–160, Mike Marietta 78-82–160, Dennis Hruska 81-80–161, Pat Havel Jr. 81-80–161, Nathan Aho 79-82–161, Jeff Blewett 163 (round scores not available), Chris Rhoades 79-84–163 and Brett Specker 165 (round scores not available).

Specker didn’t secure his spot until he won a three-way sudden-death playoff with Rick Rhoades and Mike Parks.

Here are the pairings for the first round of match play:

Upper bracket —

Wester vs. Specker, Kenn Hruska vs. Negrinelli, Luke vs. Aho and Nygard vs. Havel.

Lower bracket —

Prunick vs. Chris Rhoades, Hansen vs. Marietta, Bjorne vs. Blewett and Kamps vs. Dennis Hruska.
