Hruska, Higgins top MGC club qualifiers

MARQUETTE — Qualifying was held in two club championship tournaments at the Marquette Golf Club on Sunday.

Eight golfers now advance to match play this weekend in both the Ladies Club Championship and Senior Club Championship.

Sunday’s highlight was the hole-in-one achieved by ladies medalist Jan Hruska. She used a 3-wood to ace the 129-yard 15th hole at Greywalls. It was her fourth career ace, with three coming in tournaments. Witnesses were playing partners Karla McCutcheon, Sheila Grazulis and Kris Saint Onge along with caddies Pavel McCutcheon, Marius Grazulis and Don Koskey.

Hruska shot 79 for a four-shot victory over runner-up Jenny Marietta and her 83. Also qualifying for match play were Saint Onge with 85, Nicole Noble 89, Sheila Grazulis 91, Kristen Bjorne 96, Karla McCutcheon 97 and Mary Rombouts 104.

Friday’s first round of matches include Hruska vs. Rombouts and Noble vs. Grazulis in the upper bracket and Marietta vs. McCutcheon and Saint Onge vs. Bjorne in the lower bracket.

For the seniors, Jim Higgins shot 74 for medalist honors by a half-dozen strokes over runner-up Mike Devine and his 80. They join defending champion Kenn Hruska into match play, along with Tom Robinson, who shot 81; Kim Frazier with 82; and Robert Carlson, Jim Zorza and Charles Kronschnabel, each with 84.

This weekend’s first-round matches are Hruska vs. Kronschnabel and Robinson vs. Frazier in the upper bracket and Higgins vs. Zorza and Devine vs. Carlson in the lower bracket.
