Marquette Blues win Mid Pen League baseball title

By Journal Sports Staff

NEGAUNEE — After coming up short in the Mid Pen League Tournament last season, the Marquette Legion baseball team redeemed itself Saturday evening.

The Blues got a strong pitching outing from Jon Jason and held on late to top Copper Country 3-1 and claim the league title.

Marquette won the league in 2014, 2015 and 2017 with the Negaunee Diamonds taking it last year.

“I thought J.J. did a really nice job on the mound,” Blues head coach Derek Swajanen said. “He got into trouble a couple of times, but he got a double play ball to get out of it and he did just enough to win.

“Copper Country has been coming on strong and they’ve been playing well, but we’re peaking at the right time.”

Marquette got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jason then did his part by both shutting out the Flames and holding them hitless through four innings.

After CC got one run back in the top of the fifth, the Blues pushed their advantage back up to two runs in their half of the frame. Jason kept the Flames off the scoreboard the rest of the way and the Blues’ celebration began.

Jason gave up one run on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Carter Crouch took the loss for the Flames after surrendering three runs on two hits with six walks and five strikeouts.

Blake Henriksen and Jakob Peterson led the Blues at the plate with Henriksen going 1 for 2 with a RBI and a run scored and Peterson going 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Eli Oldt was CC’s offensive leader as he went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
