Escanaba High School names Tony Perino as athletic director

ESCANABA — Tony Perino is returning to his alma mater to become the athletic director at Escanaba High School.

The 1982 EHS graduate, a three-sport athlete at the school, was named AD at a school board meeting held July 15.

Perino was AD last school year at Rapid River High School, where he also coached girls varsity basketball and had been a teacher for the past two school years.

He began his coaching career 17 years ago at Lemmer Elementary School in East Lansing.

He’s had to hit the ground running with his hiring this close to the start of the next school year.

“Yeah, it’s busy,” Perino said. “There’s four vacancies that need to be filled, there’s some contracts that need to be signed or turned back. The difference here is having full-time to do that position, rather than do two full-time positions squashed into 24 hours at Rapid (River). Based on Rapid being considered a smaller school, it’s really only considered half-time.”

He talked about an 100-day plan of things he hopes to accomplish right away, noting he wants to try to complete football schedules two years in advance.

Perino takes over for Nick Nolde, who held the position at Escanaba for five years.
