Drivers still sought for V8 division

SANDS TOWNSHIP — Sands Speedway is still looking for more interested drivers to race in its new V8 sportsmans division.

The fuel-injected experimental class, which runs three Mustangs at the moment, is looking for a few more to be able to run a feature race as a separate class. Currently, they run the heats and feature races with the super stocks division.

The class was created as a way to get newer makes and models out to the racetrack, according to car builder Bob Goodwin.

“The stock V8 cars are old, they don’t make them anymore,” he said. “We thought we would try to make a racecar out of the cars of today. Back in the 1970s, people went to the junkyards, bought a wrecked car, the newest model they could find, built it up and came back to the racetrack with it and they were fast.

“Why don’t these V8 Mustangs, Camaros, and Chargers come out to the track. With a little bit of ingenuity, you can by a roll cage kit now. The kits are cheap, they fit right in and any amateur welder can weld them together. If we had more of these, this could be a lot of fun.”

Right now there aren’t any particular specifications besides being a fuel-injected V8.

“They’re stock engines, stock cars and we’re running street tires,” said driver of the No. 46 Mustang Victoria Hawley. “You also need a roll cage of course. They’re easier to get parts for when you wreck, because you can go to any salvage yard or get them online.

“It makes things cheap and fun.”

The track is hoping for at least one or two more cars to operate as its own class.
