Niemi named head coach for IHS boys hoops

By Journal Sports Staff

ISHPEMING — George Niemi has been promoted to the varsity level again.

After being promoted to Ishpeming High School varsity football head coach from the junior varsity level in May, Niemi will jump from the JV squad again, but this time on the basketball court.

Niemi will lead the boys Hematites cagers this upcoming season, according to a press release sent out Thursday morning.

Niemi replaces Anthony Katona, who coached the Hematites varsity team for three seasons, leading them to consecutive Class C district title games in 2017 and 2018.

Katona resigned in May with Ishpeming athletic director Terry Roberts saying it was Katona’s “personal decision” to step down.
