NEGAUNEE — Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie and go on to an 8-4 victory over the Negaunee Blasters on the opening night of the Superiorland Baseball League season on Monday night at Iron Town Field in Negaunee.

In the adult league’s other game Monday, the Marquette County Mavericks mercy-ruled State Farm-Jill Leonard 12-0 in five innings. The game between Blagec Heating of Iron Mountain at the Channing Railroaders was postponed until Thursday due to poor field conditions.

Coldwell Banker 8, Blasters 4

Brian Pietila had the key hit in the winners’ rally, cracking a bases-loaded double.

Craig Storm had two singles and Paul Storm singled and walked twice as Pietila also reached base three times with several walks.

Steve Daavettila started on the mound for Coldwell, giving up four runs in four innings, before Gabe Daavettila went three scoreless innings in relief.

Mavericks 12, State Farm 0

At the Forsyth Township Ball Field in Gwinn, the Mavericks started fast after player-manager James Larsen II walked to lead off the game and came around two batters later on a Steve Hintsala homer.

Just a few batters later, Aaron “Goose” Adriano also hit a two-run homer with Spencer Larson aboard after he singled to make it 4-0.

In the second, Hintsala hit another roundtripper, this one of the three-run variety. The inning began when Jake Spear singled, Larsen reached on an error and Hunter Larson had an RBI single.

Later in the inning, Spencer Larson and Adriano singled while Sam Prentice and Brad Jalonen reached on errors as all four scored to make it 12-0.

Hintsala pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three, then Jacob Adriano threw one inning and Dave Speaker Jr. went the final two innings without allowing a hit.

At the plate, Hintsala was 2 for 3 with the two homers and a walk, Aaron Adriano 2 for 2 with a homer and two runs scored, Spencer Larson had two hits, while Larsen drew three walks.
