Bill Sved leads Marquette, Negaunee contingent with top-100 age group finish at Boston Marathon

BOSTON — A look at online results appears to show eight runners from Marquette County who completed the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Bill Sved is the star of the group, making a top-100 finish among 70-74-year-old men, the only one of these runners to come up with a finish in the top 250 of their division.

Sved, 70, of Marquette and the former cross country coach at North Star Academy, completed the 26.2-mile course in 4 hours, 34 minutes and 33 seconds, good for 64th place in his division, 12,512th among all men and 21,907th place overall.

The Boston Marathon website, www.baa.org, lists 143 men in that age group as having started the race and 132 finishing.

His first four five-kilometer splits were all within a few seconds of 30 minutes, with later ones ranging from about 32 to 37 minutes.

Another Marquette runner, Barbara Trudeau, 60, was 277th in the women’s 60-64 division in 4:40:11. She was also 9,725th among all women and 22,548th overall.

The site lists 442 women starting and 430 finishing in that group.

From Negaunee, Peter Wertanen, 66, was 357th in the men’s 65-69 group, clocking 4:48:48 for 13,167th among men and 23,308th overall.

His grouping lists 492 starting and 468 finishing.

The other Negaunee entrant, Robert Fox, 56, was 705th in the men’s 55-59 group in 3:48:17, also 9,213th among all men and 14,059th overall.

His group lists 1,583 starters and 1,552 finishers.

Also in that same men’s age group was Marquette’s Keith Kuykendall, 57, who was 766th in 3:51:33, 9,532nd among men and 14,870th overall.

The youngest of the eight, Kara Graci, 36, of Marquette, was 2,225th in the women’s 18-39 group in 3:36:48. She was also 3,135th among all women and 11,005th overall.

The marathon site lists 5,844 women starting in this youngest adult group and 5,655 finishing.

Melaine Bicigo, 39, of Marquette was 2,366th in the same group in 3:38:33, also 3,409th amongst all women and 11,504th overall.

A third woman in that group, Stephanie Grosvenor, 38, of Marquette was 3,070th in the group in 3:48:06. She was 4,816th among all women and 14,006th overall.

A check of numerous other cities in Marquette, Alger, Luce, Baraga and Schoolcraft counties didn’t turn up any entrants.
