Mutineers start off strong

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Mutineers are off to a fast start in Great Lake Hockey League action, sitting tied for first early in the 2018-19 season.

Following a pair of wins last weekend at home, the Mutineers have six points with three wins and a single loss. The GLHL is a full-contact, adult men’s hockey league that features many former college and junior level players.

The league features nine teams, including three from the Upper Peninsula and six from Wisconsin. Besides the Marquette squad, U.P. teams include the Calumet Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers.

Last Friday, the Mutineers beat the Fond du Lac bears 7 to 3, following that victory up with a 9 to 3 win over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Saturday night at Lakeview Arena.

Friday’s goal scorers were Dallas McLaughlin with two and single tallies from Bob Erspamer, Chris Freeborn, Justin Cain, Ryan Sullivan and Ben Hughes. Joey Enright and Wolf Belanger each had two assists while Cory Bordeau, Brandon Smaby, Craig Hartz, Neeco Belanger, Ryan Schmeltzer and Ben Wheeler each had one assist. Aaron LaBelle was the winning goalie with 25 saves

In Saturday’s game, Neeco Belanger led the way with a three-goal hat trick, with Bordeau adding two goals and McLaughlin, Enright, Hartz and Wolf Belanger each netting one goal. Wolf Belanger had three assists; McLaughlin and Wheeler each had two assists; and Cain, Freeborn, Jordan Truxton, John Aho, Enright and goalie Brandon Knopp getting one assist each. Knopp was the winning goalie with 20 saves.

The Mutineers travel to Fond du Lac and Fox Cities this weekend for a pair of games. The next home game is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 4 at Lakeview Arena against the Eagle River Falcons. The Falcons share the lead in the league with the Mutineers with a 3-0 record.
