GAYLORD — The Marquette volleyball team extended its season Tuesday night with a 3-1 set victory over Traverse City West.

Marquette dropped the first set 19-25 to the Titans, but won the next three 25-14, 25-22, 25-21.

Redettes head coach Mike Morgan was not at the match, but in a phone interview, he said how proud he was of his squad.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls and the effort they put in,” he said. “This was a great leap forward and it’s good to see them starting to realize their potential.”

In the third set, the Redettes held a slim 15-12 advantage and then junior outside hitter Seiler Hruska notched back-to-back service aces to extend the lead to 17-12.

However, some hitting errors helped TC West to tie the set at 17-17. Marquette wasn’t shaken though and used some strong play around the net to win the set.

During the fourth and deciding set, the Redettes jumped out to a 15-10 lead. Down 18-13 at one point, the Titans called a timeout and started to gather steam. TC West used some Marquette errors to tie the set at 18-18 and forced the Redettes to call timeout.

After the timeout, the Titans got back-to-back aces from Abby Rickert to go up by two points. However, a TC West error gave Marquette the ball and the Redettes didn’t look back as they controlled the rest of the set and won the match.

With the win, the Redettes advance to the district semifinals where they will face Gaylord at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

If they win, they’ll take on the winner of the Petoskey-Alpena match at 1 p.m.
