Marquette Oldtimers softball team wins again, this time over Gwinn

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Marquette made it a perfect 3-0 so far this summer with a 9-6 Oldtimers softball victory over Gwinn in a game played at Lions Field in Marquette Township last Friday.

Already with two wins over Negaunee earlier this season, Marquette opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Bill Hetrick scored on a hit by Pedro Flynn and fielder’s choice by Joe Stupsky.

Gwinn tied it in the top of the second when Dave Derwine doubled and scored on a single, though Marquette retook a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning following a walk to Bob Wood, double by Ed Bernard and single by Stupsky.

The visitors made their bid for victory by scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth and twice more in the fifth for a 6-3 lead. The big blow was a two-run homer by Derwine in the fifth.

But Marquette had another rally up its sleeve with a five-run bottom of the fifth, all the runs scoring with two outs, then adding an insurance run in the sixth.

Flynn, Hetrick, Bruce Wood and Fred Hume each had two hits for the winners, while Derwine, Hank St. Aubin, D.J. Erickson, Loren Reetz and Mike Adams did the same for Gwinn.

Flynn and Ed Bernard shared pitching duties for Marquette, while Derwine was on the rubber for Gwinn.
