Marquette finishes sweep of Oldtimers softball series with Negaunee

MARQUETTE — Marquette pulled off a sweep of Oldtimers softball games against Negaunee this summer, winning the rematch 13-6 on Friday at Hurley Field in Marquette after posting a 10-1 victory in Negaunee on July 11.

At Hurley, Negaunee opened with two runs in the top of the first with a single by Gary Anderson, double by Andy Dellangelo and single by Ed Van Luven.

But the home team erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the opening inning. The eight-hit rally was highlighted by Pedro Flynn’s two-run double and Bill Hetrick’s two-run triple.

Marquette added to its total with two runs in both the second and fourth innings and one more in the sixth off pitcher Dave Brown of Negaunee.

Negaunee mounted a comeback in the seventh with a double by Dellangelo, RBI singles by Brown, Dave Savolainen and Don Trudell to score four runs.

Flynn and Ed Bernard shared pitching duties for the home squad, slowing the visitors enough to get the win and pull to within 24-21 in their all-time series.

Marquette was led by Bernard with three hits and three runs scored and Joe Stupsky with three hits. Flynn, Loren Reetz and Tom Sullivan added two hits apiece for the winners.
