Christensen, Nelson lead Buck’s to victory

NEGAUNEE — Libby Nelson was 5 for 5 with a double and Nicole Christensen 5 for 6 with two doubles as Buck’s Party Store outscored Sisters 29-12 in a Class A game of the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Aug. 1.

Sisters’ Madie Royea was 4 for 4 and Sandie Whitford 3 for 4 with a double.

In another “A” contest, Sarah Massie was a perfect 4 for 4 to lead Tino’s to a close 10-9 decision over Martin Sports. The winners’ Alexis Forchini was 4 for 5 while Kylie Carlson and Cristine Larson each went 3 for 4.

Martin’s Veronica Slone was 3 for 3 with two homers and a double, while teammate Jordan Kowalski was also 3 for 3 with a triple and Kendal Miller 2 for 3 with a double.

Abbie Salisbury went 4 for 4 and Brittney Rovelsky 3 for 3 as Venice 1 pounded Jasper Ridge Brewery 20-5. Jasper’s Taylor Watters and LeAnn Saarela both were 2 for 3.

In Class B, all five games had close final scores. That included Quality Car Care’s 19-18 nailbiter over Signs Unlimited.

QCC’s Gina Debelak, who tripled, and Lori Revord, who hit two doubles, each went 3 for 4. Signs’ Sandy Carlson was 5 for 5 and Sue Luokkala 4 for 5.

Another one-run “B” game was Dave’s Collision posting a 16-15 win over Pasquali’s. Dave’s Mel Bess and Pasquali’s Nikki Frisk each went 4 for 4, Bess homering and Frisk hitting a double.

Venice 3 got by on a two-run decision with a 20-18 win over Brogie’s.

The winners’ Jen Laurila and Julie Boule were both 4 for 4 while teammate Caylie Gray was 3 for 4 with a homer. Brogie’s Bailey Peterson was 2 for 4.

Carla Honkala and Kaitlin Daavettila each tripled in VALIC’s 10-7 win over Paradise. Maria Stanaway was 2 for 2 and Kaylin Maynard and Kathy Maynard both 2 for 3 for Paradise.

Hailey Fezatt tripled and doubled in Buster’s 19-14 win over Yooper Shirts, whose Cassidy Hahn was cited for good offense and defense.

In Class C, Kristen Utzman went 4 for 4 and Mara Couch 4 for 5 with each homering as Venice 2 scored a 19-18 win over Jack’s Teepee 2, whose Holly Loukkala tripled.

Also in Class C, Chelsea Hewitt hit two homers and Anna Chipman one in U.P. Health Plan’s 12-11 tight win over Bertucci Construction. The winners’ Melissa Aho and Ellen Sundberg each hit triples, while Cheryl Churack and Kera Williams both doubled.

Bertucci’s Hailey Hytinen slapped two doubles.

Toni Tikkanen went 5 for 5 with two doubles in Pineshears’ 17-11 win over Eagles. The winners’ Chelsea Roberts, who tripled, and Lisa Wood each were 4 for 4, while Amanda Arbelius was 3 for 4 with a double.

The Eagles’ Amber Nault went 4 for 4 while teammate Maria Heard homered.

Beckey Grove hit a triple and Krystal Heikkinen a double in a 13-10 win posted by Willey’s Tire Shop over River Rock Lanes, which got two homers from Jordan Fitzpatrick and one roundtripper from Brianna Lynch.

Macey Nault and Megan Mattson each doubled as Jack’s Teepee 1 bumped Marquette Embroidery 17-11 despite a seventh-inning comeback by the Embroiderers.
