Westwood solid in Division 7

MARQUETTE — Five 11-player high school football teams seem to be well entrenched in the divisions they expect to participate in if they make the playoffs after this week’s games.

Westwood, at 7-1, is solidly in the field and according to a listing of the state’s four-or-more-win teams, should be playing in Division 7.

The MHSAA came out with a list of 318 teams with at least four wins earlier this week, which divided into eight equal divisions based on enrollment puts just about 40 teams per division.

The actual playoffs will include 256 teams with 32 teams in each division as some of the four-wins teams won’t be included.

Westwood is listed as having the 248th largest enrollment where the schools from 239th to 278th would be expected to make it into Division 7.

Newberry is also all but assured a playoff spot at 5-2 and has the 301st largest enrollment, well below an expected cut line of 279th for Division 8.

Likewise, Munising at 4-3 can get the nearly-automatic spot with a win and has the 304th largest enrollment.

Negaunee and Marquette, both at 4-4, have to win this week to have a chance at an “at large” bid if the five-win teams don’t fill the field.

Negaunee has the 216th largest enrollment, almost in the middle of Division 6 that would include the 199th to 238th enrollments.

And Marquette is 93rd, putting them well within the Division 3 range expected to include the 80th to 119th enrollments.

Official release of playoff teams and pairings for 11-player and eight-player football will be announced at 7 p.m. Sunday on the annual Selection Sunday Show television show on Fox Sports Detroit Plus.
