Couch’s slam, Clark’s hit lift Venice 2 to win

NEGAUNEE — Mara Couch hit a grand slam homer and Melissa Clark had the winning hit in her 3-for-4 night as Venice 2 edged Wooden Nickel 23-22 in extra innings in a Class C game in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on June 7.

The Nickel’s Whitney Baugnet hit two homers and a triple while teammate Katie Walker was 4 for 5.

In other Class C action, Katie Menard collected seven RBIs and Heather Sandstrom six as Marquette Embroidery outscored U.P. Health Plan 33-19.

Menard and teammate Angela Leece homered, as did UPHP’s Anna Chipman. Stacie Vahamaa had four RBIs, Chipman three and Kera Williams and Taryn Gleason two apiece.

Kaylin Maynard and Katelyn Axford each had a grand slam in their three-hit nights as Paradise put up a 32-5 victory over Jack’s Teepee 2.

Teammate Rachel Frederick contributed a double in a 4-for-4 night, while Jack’s Kristi DeCaire had two hits.

Chelsea Roberts went 5 for 6 as AAA Insurance put together a 20-run inning to come from behind and defeat Bertucci Construction 27-11. Bertucci’s Rhonda Bertucci homered.

Jordan Wixtrom clubbed three homers as River Rock Lanes pummeled Willey’s Tire Shop 19-9. Both Wixtrom and teammate Brooke LeClaire went 4 for 4.

Willey’s Miranda hit a grand slam while going 3 for 5 and Ashley Juchemich was 3 for 4.

Val Prusi hit two homers, one a grand slam, and Jessica Noskey tripled to help U.P. Fabricating overcome QCPFC 18-8. QCPFC’s Katie Trudgeon and Krystal Foster each went 3 for 3.

In Class A, Mandie Meyer hit the rare over-the-fence home run and went 3 for 5 in Cognition Brewing Co.’s 19-8 win over Jasper Ridge Brewery.

Teammate Nicolette Schultz was 4 for 5, while Jasper’s Alyssa Bjork, who was 4 for 4, and Lexi Taavola, who was 3 for 4, each hit two doubles.

Abbie Salisbury and Ashley Pietro both went 5 for 6 as Venice 1 outscored Sister’s 30-23. Sister’s Anna Noskey had four hits.

Stacie Kruse led a lusty hitting attack in Screened Image’s 37-2 pounding of Honkala Construction. The winners’ Mariah LaPointe-Dunham and Taylor Ring each went 5 for 5, while Charissa Johnson had two triples.

Honkala’s Brittany Daavettila and Maria Honkala each went 2 for 2.

Sara Polini was 5 for 5 and Shannon Clemo 4 for 5 to lead Buck’s Party Store to a 20-9 win over Crossfit 906. Crossfit’s Ashley Kind, who homered, and Hilary Richardson both went 3 for 4.

Loretta Waananen collected four hits and Sue Rice homered in Jubilee Foods’ 27-14 win over Martin Sports. Martin’s Ashley Asgaard homered, Shana Caliguri had four hits and Thalicia Gray three hits.

In Class B, Kymber Beltrame hit the game-winning homer to lead Jack’s Teepee 1 to a 13-10 victory over Venice 3. The victors’ Jordann Grigg had a triple, while Venice’s Emily Wright homered and Caylie Gray and Becky Lee each tripled.

Ashley Wanhala and Brandi Anderson each homered in 4-for-5 nights to lead Buster’s to a 29-9 win over Eagles. The Eagles’ Janelle Buttery was 2 for 3 and Janie Fleming 1 for 2.

Jamee Gobert and Arica Altobello both homered as Dave’s Collision bested Signs Unlimited 17-11. Dave’s Mel Bess was 4 for 5, while Signs’ Jess Peura-Koski went 3 for 3 and teammate Nikki Chapman was cited for a great game playing shortstop.

Katie Rankinen went 3 for 3 with a pair of triple and a double in Tino’s 7-1 victory over Pasquali’s.

And Yooper Shirts nipped Quality Car Care 13-12, though details weren’t available.
