Miners runners-up at own baseball invite

NEGAUNEE — The host Miners finished as runners-up at their own Negaunee Baseball Invitational on Saturday.

NHS opened with a 9-1 victory over L’Anse in the morning before falling 7-3 in the championship game to Calumet that afternoon.

The other team in the tournament was Iron Mountain, which had lost to the Copper Kings in the other first-round game. No information was available about whether a third-place game was played between the Purple Hornets and Mountaineers.

In the Negaunee-L’Anse game, Miners sophomore pitcher Tylor Robinson pitched all six innings, scattering three hits, walking none and striking out three.

Negaunee supported their pitcher with a five-run outburst in the second while putting together a three-run fifth to insure the victory.

Junior Jake Hill had three of the Miners’ 10 hits, knocking in a run, too, while senior Elek Kallionen added two hits and two RBIs while scoring twice. Sophomore Carter Richardson had a hit and RBI and scored twice.

Against Calumet, Negaunee gave up two runs in the top of the first and had to play catch-up the rest of the way, scoring a single run in the first, fourth and sixth.

Miners senior pitcher Mark Anderson was the victim of a shoddy defense that committed six errors that turned into five unearned runs. He allowed just four hits and two earned runs, striking out three and walking two.

Senior Brock Aho had a double in two at-bats, knocking in a run, while Richardson and freshman Alex Munson had Negaunee’s only other hits.

Negaunee hits the road for a doubleheader at Norway starting at 4:30 p.m. EDT Monday.
