NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee track and field teams have looked solid all season, and at Thursday’s 5-team meet, the Miners showed that a big title could be on the horizon.

Negaunee swept both the boys and girls meets at its home quinquangular with the boys racking up 141.5 points and the girls 153.5. Ishpeming took second in both meets.

The Miners won eight boys events including the 4X400 and 4X800 meter relays, and were led individually by Colton Yesney who took home three titles (800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs). Michael Sedlock (100 hurdles), Robert Williams (300 hurdles) and Mike Pizziola (shot put) also picked up wins for the Miners.

“I think today went well,” Negaunee boys coach Kevin Bell said. “It’s been a long week with three meets, but we’ve been getting through it. Colton had another great day and so did Mike and they both have been consistent all year. We’re also doing really well in the field events right now. I like what I’m seeing overall.”

Ishpeming finished with 96 points and won the 4X100 relay. The Hematites also won three individual events with Daren Giuchin (400 dash), Wyatt Bodette (pole vault) and Cooper Harris (long jump) taking home titles.

“I thought things went pretty good considering we have a couple of kids with the stomach flu,” Hematites head coach P.J. Pruett said. “Today, we just tried to compete the best we could and Daren did a great job in the 400. We’re just trying to concentrate on regionals and meets like these are good training for us.”

Norway finished third overall followed by L’Anse and Gwinn. The Knights won the 4X200 relay and the high jump, while the Purple Hornets finished first in the 100 and 200 dashes as well as the discus.

On the girls’ side, the Miners won the 4X800 relay and were led by Ielee Shiroda, who won both the 200 and 400 dashes. Clara Johnson (1,600 run), Emily Paupore (800 run), Talon Prusi (3,200 run), Emily Nelson (pole vault) and Abigail Boehmer (long jump) also earned wins for Negaunee.

“I’m very proud of the girls today,” Negaunee head coach Vickie Paupore said. “We had a lot of good performances. Our 4X800 relay did an amazing job and they were only eight seconds from the school record. Ielee also did an amazing job today doing two events that she normally doesn’t do. She and Abigail also both set personal bests in the long jump, so that was exciting as well. With the short turnaround after the WIN meet, I had to shift my lineup, so some of our distance runners are only running one event today, but they all did well too.”

Ishpeming finished 36 points behind the Miners and won the other three relay events. Katie Loman (100 and 300 hurdles) and Marissa Maino (discus and shot put) both won two events for the Hematites.

“Katie really stood out to me today,” Pruett said. “She won both of the hurdles and anchors the 400 and 800 relays. She is just a great track athlete. She’s a little hurt right now, but she’s still doing very well.”

Gwinn took third place and had one individual champion in Emily Curtice (100 dash), while L’Anse finished fourth and won the high jump. Norway finished in fifth place.
