Marquette Eagle Mine Bantams youth hockey team advances to this weekend’s state tourney

MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Eagle Mine Bantam B hockey team won its District 8 tournament championship game in the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association on Feb. 5.

The team advances to Bantam B state tournament to be held in the Detroit suburb of Fraser from Friday through Sunday.

Eagle Mine defeated Negaunee Public Service Garage-Stone Reflections 4-3 in the district championship game after each team won semifinal games earlier on Feb. 5.

The Marquette team opened the tourney with a 2-0 loss to Public Service-Stone Reflections, then defeated Calumet 5-3. Its semifinal win was a 4-3 win over Escanaba Riverside, while the Negaunee team had defeated Houghton M&M Powersports.

In addition, the Eagle Mine team also won the George Heimbuch Tundra Tussle on Feb. 26 with a 9-2 victory over the hometown Green Bay, Wis., Bobcats in the championship.

Eagle Mine won pool play games over three Wisconsin opponents -- 5-1 over Chippewa Falls and over the Sun Prairie Cardinals, and 9-0 over Arrowhead.
