906 Adventure youth racers compete in Wisconsin

MARQUETTE – Youth racers on the 906 Adventure Composite team traveled to Iola, Wisconsin, to race in the Iola Igniter on Aug. 18. It was the second race in the Wisconsin High School Cycling League series.
Leading the way for the 906 team were siblings Erin and Carson VanderSchaaf. Each repeated as winners in their respective junior high races with Carson crossing the finish line first in the sixth-grade race in 26 minutes, 33 seconds, while Erin defended her series leader jersey with a time of 28:07 on the 5 1/2-mile course.
Joining Carson on the podium was twin brother Colin, who moved up a spot into second place in 26:50. Rounding out the junior high finishers was seventh-grader Tucker Close in 24th in 33:04.
On the high school side, the 906 team was again led by freshman Jacey Johnson, who duplicated her result from the first race of the series in fifth place, covering the 10-mile course in 57:11.
Two more 906 racers notched top-10 finishes, with Alex Stanley earning seventh in the JV race, with a 14 1/2-mile time of 1:02:52, and Caden Holm, 10th in the freshman boys event, covering 10 miles in 48:00.

The 906 Adventure Composite Team includes youth from the Marquette and Negaunee school districts. They are the first Michigan team to compete in a National Interscholastic Cycling Association.
