Wildcat track athletes succeed on windy day

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Northern Michigan University track team had three athletes earn titles Saturday at the Augustana Viking Olympics.

The Wildcats finished second overall out of six teams with 213 points. Winona State (Minn.) won the title with 423 and the host Vikings took third with 172.

Ine Mylie won the triple jump (38-2.25) and the 100-meter hurdles (15:57), while Michelle Juergen won the high jump (5-feet-7) and set a NCAA provisional mark. Kameron Burmeister was the last top finisher as she won the 5,000 meter run (17:59.77).

10 more Wildcats placed in the top five at the event.

Four athletes took second in their events including Juergen in the long jump, Avadon James in the 100 dash, Kieren Becker in the 1,500 run and Sarah Goble in the 5,000 meter run.

The 4X100 relay squad of James, Jenny Chang, Jenna Long and Yasmin Jelassi also took second (50.75) as well as the 4X400 team of Becker, Shayla Huebner, Danielle Brzezinski and Paige Dutcher (4:00.81).

Four athletes finished third in their respective events including Brzezinski in the 400 dash, Becker in the 800 run, Long in the 200 dash and Samanthia Johnson in the discus.

Northern also had three fourth place and two fifth place finishes. The Wildcats’ next meet is April 8 at the Rex Foster Invite in Whitewater, Wis.
