Marquette Mtn. to host ski finals

MARQUETTE – Marquette Mountain on Monday would be the perfect setting for Marquette Senior High School to pull off its first sweep of MHSAA Division 1 downhill skiing titles since 2009.

The Redmen and Redettes are among nine schools in each meet being held in their backyard.

The MSHS boys are the three-time defending champions, having won 10 titles in all since 1997. With MHSAA records going back to 1975, the Redmen also have seven runner-up finishes in that span.

The Marquette girls haven’t won a state title since 2009, but have eight since 1999 to go with five runner-up finishes listed in the MHSAA archive.

No admission will be charged for spectators at the ski hill on Monday.

The boys giant slalom and girls slalom is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., shortly after the playing of the national anthem and a parade of flags.

As long as the weather cooperates, boys slalom and girls GS should get started at around 1 p.m.

Marquette is one of four schools that qualified both its boys and girls teams for the finals, joining Traverse City Central, Traverse City West and Bloomfield Hills.

Other boys qualifiers are White Lake Lakeland, Brighton, Clarkston, Rochester Adams and Detroit Catholic Central.

The girls’ field is rounded out by Milford, Bloomfield Hills Marian, Walled Lake Northern, South Lyon United and Lake Orion.
