New look for Purple Hornets

L’ANSE – The L’Anse High School boys basketball team will have a new look – and a new coach – for this upcoming season.

The Purple Hornets will break in numerous new players under new coach Harry Miron. Mike Ostermeyer resigned the post he had held the past five years for health reasons.

Miron, the JV coach the past few years, said he inherits a young team and is likely to start two freshmen.

“We have just two seniors (Trevor Uren and Kyle Menard) and they’ll play a lot,” he said. “We had a couple other lettermen, but both of them are recovering from football injuries. They would have provided some needed size under the basket.”

The two, senior Brad Mattson and junior Brandt Tembreull, won’t be back until the second half of the season, if at all.

Senior Brandon Koski, who hadn’t played basketball since the seventh grade, is also trying out.

Juniors Dylan Harden, Brian Fedie and Dylan Grentz are looking to break into the starting lineup. Sophomore Chris Parker is another possibility.

Freshmen Logan Fish and and Louis Curtis could be in the lineup because of their speed.

“They’re both pretty quick,” Miron said. “In fact, we have some good young players coming up on the JV and junior high squads.”

Another freshman trying to break into the lineup is Steve Beauprey.

Without any size to speak of, Miron says his team will have to play an uptempo style of play.

“We could get beat up on the boards, so we’ll have to run,” he noted.

The new LHS skipper feels that a tall West Iron County team could be the favorite in the Western Peninsula Athletic Conference, commonly known as the West PAC.

“I know they’re going to be very tall and they have a lot of experience,” he said about the Wykons.

“Calumet always seems to have talent and Houghton is usually good, too.

“We’ll be battling but I hope we can have some fun.”

The Hornets start with five away games, meeting Houghton in the opener next week at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10. They follow with contests at Westwood, WIC, Baraga and Calumet.

“Our first home game will be against Ishpeming and that figures to be a tough hurdle,” Miron said of a Jan. 8 matchup.
