Northern spikers pad win streak; swimmers set records

AURORA, Ill. – The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to five Saturday afternoon with two victories at the Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill.

The Wildcats defeated St. Joseph’s (Ind.) in four sets (25-14, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18) earlier in the day and Bellarmine (Ky.) also in four sets (19-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-17) in a late match.

Kayla Chosa led the Wildcats with 16 kills against St. Joseph’s and had 15 kills against Bellarmine. She tied with Lisa Studnicka in the second game.

After dropping the first set to Bellarmine, NMU (15-6, 4-5 GLIAC) rallied by winning the next three sets. Jami Hogeboom had 41 assists, Bridget Bussell five assisted blocks and Alex Berger 15 digs.

In Northern’s first match of the day, the Wildcats dominated the first set and then picked up wins in the second and fourth frames.

NMU also notched nine aces in the match, with Berger and Hogeboom getting three apiece.

Bussell recorded 11 kills against St. Joseph’s, while Berger posted 26 digs and Hogeboom 40 assists.

Northern remains on the road next weekend as the Wildcats play at Ohio Dominican at 7 p.m. Friday and at Tiffin (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

At Moorhead, Minn., the Northern Michigan University swimming and diving teams competed in a quadrangular meet this weekend against host Minnesota State Moorhead, St. Cloud State (Minn.) and Northern State (S.D.).

The NMU women’s team defeated all three schools Saturday, while the men’s lost to St. Cloud State (162-138). The Wildcat women beat St. Cloud, 165-135; Northern State, 238-56; and MSUM 200-100.

On Saturday, the women’s team won 11 of the 16 events to win the meet.

The Wildcats took first in both diving events with Angela Probstfeld winning the 1-meter event (254.80) and Molly Kearney winning the 3-meter (266.30).

NMU swimmers Rachel Borchardt, Crystal Bennet and Savanna Saunders each won two events. Borchardt won the 1650 yard freestyle (18:10.89) and 500 free (5:16.26); Bennet finished first in the 100 free (54.13) and 100 butterfly (58.47); and Saunders won the 200 backstroke (2:05.76) and the 200 individual medley (2:12.28).

Other Wildcat winners were Emily Bell in the 200 fly (2:09.20) and Dana Stroven in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.98).

NMU also took first in the 200 medley relay with the team of Bennet, Regan Kilburn, Becca Arakelian and Courtney Konopitski (1:49.09).

The men took home seven titles, with Ryan Leonard, Grantas Dupkus and Renars Bundzis each winning two events. Leonard took first in the 200 fly (1:58.29) and 200 IM (1:54.45); Dupkus the 200 free (1:44.36) and 500 free (4:49.49); and Bundzis the 100 (53.18) and 200 backstrokes (1:54.18).

Janne Roovers finished first in the 1650 free (16:50.62).

On Friday, the women’s team finished second, beating MSUM (161-139) and NSU (208-54), but losing to St. Cloud (152.5-147.5). The men lost to St. Cloud 168-131.

For the NMU women, Borchardt won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:44.59 and set a pool record. Bennet won the 100 free, 200 free and 50 fly for the Wildcats.

On the men’s side, Bundzis took first in the 100 back at 51.77, and set a team mark.
