HARRIS – Befitting their nickname, the Bark River-Harris Broncos love to pound it on the ground.

But just when the Newberry defense realized that scheme, Bryce Sundquist quietly became the airborne executioner to provide precision and finesse to complement the powerful and versatile run attack.

The Broncos rode their dynamic offense to a 56-34 conquest of Newberry in a duel of previously undefeated Mid-Eastern Football Conference teams in Harris on Friday night.

Senior quarterback Bryce Sund-quist tossed four touchdown passes and ran for another. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 89 yards, finding the right moments to gash the run-minded Newberry defense.

His TD tosses covered 24 yards to Josh Madalinski and 25 yards to Nick Dwyer in the second quarter as the Broncos built a 36-15 halftime lead. Then in the third quarter, he nailed Ryan Arndt with a 38-yard score and flipped a 4-yard toss to Dwyer that raised the lead to 50-22.

Although the Broncos (3-0 overall, 2-0 MEFC) coasted much of the game, Newberrry (2-1, 1-1) was on the cusp of keeping the game up for grabs. The Indians got on the board thanks to Bark River mistakes on back-to-back plays. First the Broncos mishandled a punt near their own goalline and started at their own 1. Then they fumbled on the first play and Indians’ end David Carlson retrieved the loose pigskin just inches inside the end zone for a TD.

Newberry came right back after another BR-H score, taking seven plays to cover 65 yards, capped by John Paramski’s 25-yard scoring toss to Jeff Rahilly to cut the deficit to 16-15.

The real dagger for Newberry was the Broncos recovery of an onside kickoff at Newberry’s 25. It took just two plays for Sundquist to find Madalinski all alone in the right corner with 5:42 left in the half for a 28-15 cushion.

“That kickoff return and onside kick recovery for a possession and score,” was Newberry coach Fred Bryant’s response when asked what were the key points in the game. “We never recovered.”

Paramski hit 12 of 25 passes for 112 yards and ran for 72 yards in 13 carries. He also hit two TD passes in the third quarter, a 19-yarder to Andre James to open the quarter and 65 yards on a slant to Rahilly.
