Area players lead Finlandia

HANCOCK – With a dozen former high school players from the area on its roster, Finlandia University played its first-ever football game Saturday but lost to Alma College, 43-0, at McAfee Field in Hancock.

With an attendance listed at 1,200, the visiting Scots scored all their points in the first and third quarters while outgaining the Lions 424-179, including a 316-52 advantage rushing. Alma scored touchdowns the first three times it had the ball in each half.

Finlandia drove the ball inside the Alma 20-yard-line three times but was unable to generate any points.

Area players made their presence known for the Lions. Z-back Trevor Burke, who played for Westwood last season, caught four passes for 35 yards and returned four punts for 15 yards.

Tyler Kangas of Manistique handled the Lions’ punting chores, and was busy making nine punts as he averaged 32.7 yards per kick.

Brothers Jordan (Ishpeming graduate) and Tyler (Negaunee graduate) Windahl shared in a tackle for a loss during the game as Jordan Windahl and Westwood product Mitch Messing each led Finlandia tacklers with nine total.

Branson Richard from Superior Central had four tackles and was among six players with two solo tackles, while Burke, Tyler Windahl, Colin Immel of Munising and Dillon Hueckstaedt of Baraga each had one tackle.

Luke McAuliffe of Marquette was listed as the team’s starting right guard.
