Teal Lake Swim draws good turnout

MARQUETTE – On a warm Saturday morning, 63 swimmers decided to cool off with a long swim to help raise money for the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network.

The 2.25-mile Teal Lake swim from Negaunee to Ishpeming drew competitors from all over the state, parts of Wisconsin and as far away as Chicago and Denver.

On the men’s side, Christian Vanderkaay of downstate Grand Rapids captured the title with a time of 00:47:44.3.

Three Marquette swimmers rounded out the top four as Matthew Kurin took second (00:53:23.7), Ben Luke third (00:53:49.1) and Matthew Braner fourth (00:57.56.7).

All three competitors are ages 17 and younger.

The women’s side also had a close race.

Ellen Humberston of Weston copped the title with a time of 00:53:35, and Marquette’s Erin Vanderschaaf finished second at 00:54:49.5.

Darcy La Fountain of Boynton Beach, Fla., took third place with a time of 00:55:07.6.

Marquette’s Paige Whaley was close behind, finishing fourth at 00:55:16.9.
