Negaunee Oldtimers rip Gwinn

GWINN – With four new players added to the team, the Negaunee Oldtimers (62 years of age and older) were dominant in all phases of the game in thumping host Gwinn on Thursday, 13-1.

Two of the newest members of the team – cacher Don Williams and shortstop Fred Van Luven – joined Fred Sterk, Gerry Pirkola and Roland Koski in combining for 11 hits and three walks in 12 official trips to the plate.

They scored 11 of Negaunee’s runs.

Williams led the way, going 3 for 3 and scoring three runs while Van Luven picked up two hits and a walk, scored three times and knocked in three runs.

Sterk added two hits and scored twice; Pirkola posted two hits with two RBIs while scoring three runs; and Koski went 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs.

Dave Savolainen and pitcher Gary Anderson also collected two hits each as Negaunee pounded out 16 hits.

Anderson picked up the mound win. He allowed but two hits while only striking out a batter. He issued seven walks, including three in the sixth that produced Gwinn’s only run.

Martin Ghiardi suffered the pitching loss, while Gerry Suardini and Kurt Hedstrom picked up the only hits for Gwinn.

However, the Gwinn defense recorded two double plays in the contest involving infielders Jim Ghiardi, Guy Chaput and DJ Erickson.

Negaunee will have a rematch with Marquette at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Lions Field in Marquette Township.

Gwinn will visit Negaunee later in August.
